Previously, according to Law No. 47/2014/QH2013, Vietnam Diplomatic visa granted to members of foreign diplomatic missions in Vietnam which have the symbols: NG1, NG2, NG3, depending on specific subjects. However, Law No. 51/2019/QH14 amends and adds Vietnam Diplomatic visa with the symbol NG4. Currently, Vietnam Diplomatic visa has the symbols respectively: NG1, NG2, NG3, NG4.

Specific regulations on subjects who are granted Vietnam Diplomatic visa
- NG1 Visa - Issued to members of delegations invited by the Secretary General of Vietnam’s Communist Party of, the President of Vietnam, the President of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister.
- NG2 Visa - Issued to members of delegations invited by standing members of the Secretariat of Vietnam’s Communist Party, Deputy President of Vietnam, Deputy President of the National Assembly, Deputy Prime Minister, President of Vietnamese Fatherland Front, Executive Judge of The Supreme Court, Chief Procurator of the Supreme Procuracy, State Auditor General; members of delegations at the same levels of Ministers, Secretary Generals of Provincial Communist Authorities, President of the People’s Committees of provinces.
- NG3 Visa - Issued to members of diplomatic missions, consular offices, representative offices of international organizations affiliated with the UN, representative offices of intergovernmental organizations and their spouses, children under 18 years of age, and housemaids during their term of office.
- NG4 Visa - Issued to people who come to work with diplomatic missions, consular offices, representative offices of international organizations affiliated to the UN, representative offices of intergovernmental organizations, visitors of members of diplomatic missions, consular offices, representative offices of international organizations affiliated to the UN, and representative offices of intergovernmental organizations.
The duration of Vietnam Diplomatic visa
Foreigners are granted Vietnam visas with symbols NG1, NG2, NG3, NG4 with a duration of no more than 12 months. In these four visa symbols, only NG3 visa holders are considered for a Temporary Residence Card with the symbol NG3 (similar to the visa symbol), with a duration of no more than 5 years.
For the remaining NG1, NG2, NG4 visa types. If you want to stay longer in Vietnam, when the visa expires, please apply for a new/extended (if any) visa according to regulations.
Apply for an Approval Entry Letter for foreigners on Diplomatic visa
Normally, Vietnam visa symbols DL, TT, LD1, LD2, DT1, DT2,... procedures for inviting and guaranteeing foreigners will be sent directly to the Immigration Department.
However, in the case of foreigners entering the country in the cases of applying for a NG1, NG2, NG3, NG4 visa, they will send a written request for a visa to the competent agency or organization through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Apply for an Approval Entry letter as follows:
For NG1, NG2 Visa
- The agency or organization that invites or guarantees foreigners shall notify in writing the competent agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to direct the overseas Vietnamese visa authority (if you are subject to a visa);
- At the same time, notify the immigration authority.
For NG3, NG4 Visa
- Agencies or organizations that invite and guarantee foreigners shall directly submit a visa application to a competent agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- The competent agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shall notify the result to immigration management agency.
- After 02 working days, if the immigration management agency has no opinion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shall reply to the agency or organization and notify the competent authority to issue the visa.
After receiving a reply from a competent authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agency or organization shall notify the foreigner by email, fax, etc. Foreigners should apply for visa at overseas Vietnam visa agencies.
*Note: Agencies and organizations that apply for visa at overseas Vietnam visa agencies must pay the competent agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the fee.
Processing Time of Diplomatic NG1, NG2, NG3, NG4 visas
From the day receiving the direction from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the passport and the visa application form with a photo attached, the overseas Vietnam visa agencies issue the visa.
The specific processing time for Vietnam Diplomatic visa follows:
- NG1, NG2 Visa is in 01 working day;
- NG3, NG4 Visa is in 03 working days.
Fees for NG1, NG2, NG3, NG4 visa will be different depending on the regulations of the Vietnamese Consulate General in the host country - where the applicant applies.
