Foreign nationals who have family members who are Vietnamese citizens, or who are the spouse or child under 18 years old of a foreign national legally residing or working in Vietnam under eligible visa categories, may apply for a Vietnam visa coded TT for family visit purposes, provided that all statutory conditions are met.
So, who is eligible for a Vietnam TT visa, what documents are required, and how does the application process work? To better understand the eligibility conditions, required documents and application procedures for a Vietnam TT visa, please refer to the detailed guidance below.
What is a TT Visa? Eligible Applicant Categories
The TT visa (officially recognized as a family visit visa) is an entry and residence instrument issued to foreign nationals who possess a statutorily defined familial relationship either with a Vietnamese citizen or with a foreign national residing legally in Vietnam under approved employment, investment, or educational frameworks.
Specifically, pursuant to Article 8 of Law No. 47/2014/QH13 (amended and supplemented by Law No. 51/2019/QH14 and Law No. 23/2023/QH15), the TT designated visa is formally adjudicated and granted to the following specific demographics:
- Foreign Nationals Sponsoring Foreign Dependents: Applicable to foreign nationals who are the spouse or child under 18 years of age of a foreign national who currently holds a valid visa or a temporary residence card designated under the symbols: LV1, LV2 (working with State authorities); LS (practicing foreign lawyers); DT1, DT2, DT3 (international investors); NN1, NN2 (chiefs of representative offices, members of non-governmental organizations); DH (students or trainees); PV1 (resident foreign journalists); or LD1, LD2 (foreign laborers holding a valid work permit or an official work permit exemption).
- Vietnamese Citizens Sponsoring Foreign Relatives: Applicable to foreign nationals who are the parent, spouse, or child of a valid Vietnamese citizen.
Compliance Note: In addition to the TT visa category, foreign nationals entering the country for familial reasons or executing private affairs may also petition for a VR designated visa. What is the Validity Period of a TT Family Visit Visa?
The TT designated family visit visa is granted to foreign nationals with a maximum validity period of up to 01 year. Depending on their specific travel requirements, foreign nationals may apply for either a single-entry or a multiple-entry visa framework.
Furthermore, foreign nationals holding a valid Vietnamese TT visa are eligible to be considered for a Temporary Residence Card (TRC) under the same symbol, extending their lawful stay up to a maximum of 03 years.
Important Compliance Notes:
- Depending on the specifics of each case, the Immigration Department reserves the right to issue a visa with a duration shorter than the maximum statutory period or the duration requested by the applicant.
- Foreign nationals intending to reside continuously in Vietnam for more than 1 year are highly recommended to execute the procedures to obtain a family visit Temporary Residence Card.
Eligibility Criteria for a Foreign Family Visit Visa
To successfully qualify for a TT visa, foreign nationals must satisfy all the following prerequisites:
- Have a sponsoring relative who is a Vietnamese citizen, or be sponsored by a legally operating enterprise/organization in Vietnam.
- Possess complete, legally valid documentation verifying the explicit familial relationship between the foreign applicant and the sponsor.
- Hold a valid original passport or an acceptable international travel document.
- The foreign national must not fall under any categories restricted from entry as stipulated under active immigration frameworks.
Procedures for Applying for a Vietnam TT Visa for Foreign Nationals
To obtain a Vietnam visa coded TT for family visit purposes, the foreign national must have an entry approval letter or an invitation/approval document corresponding to the purpose of visiting family members in Vietnam.
After the entry approval letter is issued, the foreign national can proceed with the required steps to receive the TT visa and enter Vietnam within the validity period stated on the visa.
Sponsorship Dossier for Foreign Nationals
The sponsorship dossier for a foreign national applying for a Vietnam TT visa may include:
- A copy of the visa applicant’s passport;
- An application for Vietnam entry approval in accordance with current regulations;
- Documents proving the relationship between the visa applicant and the sponsor, such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, family relationship certificate or equivalent documents;

- Trip information, including the expected entry date, visa collection location and intended stay details;
- A letter of introduction or authorization letter for the person carrying out the visa application procedure at the Immigration Authority;

Notes
- Depending on each specific case, the sponsorship dossier for a foreign family member entering Vietnam may be subject to different requirements.
- The actual processing timeline may vary depending on the completeness of the dossier, the applicant’s nationality, the sponsor’s status, the visa collection location, and any additional review or supplementation required by the competent authority.
